Before retiring from corporate America in 2015, I began looking for something to keep me occupied.
A friend talked me into helping with his beehive and I was hooked. I started out with two hives and now run 25 to 30. I extract raw, local honey which is available at local farmers markets in and round Florence. I've been interested in woodworking since I was a young boy watching my father build various items using a contractors saw. I started turning several pens in 2010 and once I retired it just seemed like a natural thing to do.
I mainly turn pens, key rings, bottle openers and stoppers as well as other unique gift items. In the season, I design and turn wooden Christmas ornaments. I also make small clocks, honey dippers and cutting boards.
Our local honey is raw and unfiltered. After extracting, we simply strain the warm honey to remove any bits of wax that occur from the extraction process. Our honey is never heated above 120 degrees. This ensures that all the enzymes and pollen (the good stuff) remain in the honey. In addition to honey, we have beeswax candles and bulk beeswax. We raise local queens and have a limited supply of nucleus hives.
